Lesotho South Africa

In pictures: Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa and Lesotho

(Last Updated On: 26/02/2020)

Before visiting South Africa I didn’t know all that much about the country. However the name “Drakensberg” rang the bell, I just couldn’t really put this mountain range on the map… So when I started planning my South Africa itinerary and I figured the shuttle bus I was using stops in the heart of Drakensberg I knew I had to be there, at least for one full day!

I might not be a great hiker but I love mountains, the sense of space and freedom, the scenery changing every few steps… If you ask me to choose between sea and mountains I will always go for the later one (even if I don’t mind staying at the seaside too).

Where are Drakensberg Mountains?

Drakensberg is located more or less in the middle between Johannesburg and Durban and spreads over South Africa and Lesotho (a country that few months ago I had no idea about yet now I’ve already been there!). The highest peak reaches 3,482 meters, the second highest waterfall in the world (948 meters of free fall) can be found there too.

Drakensberg seems to be still untouched and undiscovered, there were hardly any people around and the views were just breathtaking.

48 hours in Drakensberg Mountains

I spent 48 hours in Drakensberg Mountains (though I’d love to stay there longer) and I loved every second of it. The hostel was located in the middle of nowhere, there were only wide meadows around and majestic mountains in the background.

The sunset over Drakensberg was one of the most beautiful ones I’ve ever seen. The silence in the night was so huge it kind of hurt the ears. The remote road to Lesotho, even if crazily bumpy offered incredible views that took my breath away. The hike up to the mountain to see bushmen paintings wasn’t very challenging but left me speachless for a long time.

I stayed at Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge (7.8/10 on Booking) and I can definitely recommend the place for the location, activities and facilities as well as interaction with fellow travellers. Click here to see the review and current deals.
